#GOLWR – 2017

This past Sunday, August 6th, was the 2017 version of Lifebanc’s, Gift of Life Walk and Run. The event started with a light cool breeze, filtered sunshine and a crowd of a few thousand. Opening remarks and speeches were made with a countdown to a balloon launch to remember our donors, donor families, life, and those that help us on our respective journeys. The music began …… Jim Brickman’s song, “Never Alone” with Lady Antebellum …………

May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you when it’s time to go home
May you always have plenty
The glass never empty
Know in your belly
You’re never alone
May your tears come from laughing
You find friends worth having
As every year passes
They mean more than gold
May you win and stay humble
Smile more than grumble
And know when you stumble
You’re never alone
Never alone
Never alone
It was a day filled with emotions, many tears were shed, many hugs were given and love flowed from Blossom Music Center. Of course there just as many laughs and giggles as we had fun. One of our team members, Eric McLellan (Great nephew of Bill & Marilyn Dlugos) was our lone runner this year and he came in 1st in his age group and 9th overall. It was also Dave Engeman’s 2nd Heart Anniversary. At this point, our team of 25+ has raised $1,395 to help Lifebanc continue to raise awareness about the benefits of organ donation.

#Lifebanc #GOLWR #TGA16CLE

To all Heart Warriors ……. first, thank you for your help, your love and your kindness in making this year’s version of Lifebanc’s Gift of Life Walk & Run a huge success. I know that many of us were nervous about the unknowns of having the walk in downtown Cleveland, as a part of the Transplant Games of America. Overall, I think it went fairly well.

Yes, it was still an event filled with tons and tons of emotions ….. knowing the journey that all of us took to get here, whether it was as a patient, or as a family member or friend …. the experience of our separate journeys allowed us to laugh together, to cry together and to support each other and to also remember our donors and their families, as well as some of our friends that were either waiting on a transplant they didn’t receive or passed on at some point afterwards.

We were able to honor ALL organ donors, to celebrate the extra life we’ve been blessed with and to raise some money ($2,465 at this point) for Lifebanc to help educate the community about the benefits of organ donation and also to help provide bereavement services to families whose lives have been touched by organ donation.

A special thanks to Holly, for doing a lot of assisting behind the scenes.

And a special mention to Eric McLlelan (nephew of Bill & Marilyn Dlugos) who finished 2nd in his age group and 9th overall in the race.

I am humbled and honored to have walked with all of you. Bless all of you!

~ Don

PS: If you have other pictures that you’d like me to add, just send them my way. I know many of the pictures I took were not usable.

Latest Updates

Hi everyone ……

Here are the latest updates in regard to the walk this Saturday.

The entire event will be outside of the Convention Center in Mall C, rain or shine. (Pray for sunshine)

Everyone, including walkers, will need to wear their runner bib. Folks that signed up to run the 5k or 10k have a timing chip attached to their bibs. Walkers will not be timed, thankfully.

It was recommended to arrive early to avoid traffic congestion.

At this point I’m not sure where we will meet as a team. Please do not hesitate to call me if you need to on Sat. (Email me if you don’t have my cell number) I will have my Heart Warriors shirt on and we will have the 5 foot Heart Warriors banner as well.

Parking – there are lots and garages close to the Convention Center, but remember there may be as many as 50,000 people in town for the Transplant Games. Lifebanc sent this link in regard to parking – PARKING

Other Info – EVERYONE walking will also wear a runner bib this year. The bib will allow you to enter the Convention Center. In regard to the info below, I have RSVP’ed to pick up the Heart Warriors packets at Lifebanc next Weds. The packets will include the bibs required for entrance.
